At Jakaranda Animal Hospital we believe that nothing less than the very best is good enough for our patients. We therefore went out of our way to equip the practice to such an extent that we can handle all aspects of a companion animal practice in an above average way. We will add value to you and your pet-family, and for your convenience, the following services are offered:


►  General services:


                                                                      

  • Dog and cat vaccinations against some of the most lethal diseases, combined with top class deworming and flea/tick controll, to keep your pets healthy. Puppies initially get 3 vaccinations and kittens 2, wherafter a booster vaccine is necessary once a year for the rest of their lives to maintain immunity.
  • Nutritional councelling is given free of charge by our well trained staff. It is so true, "You are what you eat". The correct food gives your pet strength and vitality.
  • We are available 24 hours per day for emergencies (see telephone no.'s on 1st page) .
  • We have an appointment system for your convenience. However, walk-ins are also welcome.
  • Multiple vets assure that you never have to wait too long for an appointment, and there is always a second opinion available within the practice, at no extra cost.
  • Our on-site laboratory provides speedy and accurate results for implementing the most effective treatment protocols.
  • Our pharmacy stocks the best drugs in the animal health care field.
  • In case of an emergency, our well trained and experienced staff, backed by our fully stocked hospital, is able to give the best life support possible.
  • We do micro-chipping, the best aid in re-uniting your lost pet with you.
  • We perform artificial insimenation (AI) on breeding bitches that have trouble to fall pregnant, as well as fertility examinations on breeding males.
  • We believe that continious education  and training is the only way to improve the quality service your pet deserves; therefore our staff is required to attend regular training courses to maintain and increase their knowledge and skills.

►  Surgery:


                                                                         

We are a small animal surgery referral centre, which means that we perform advanced orthopaedic, spinal and soft tissue surgery on dogs and cats. We also accept referrals of complicated surgical cases from other veterinary practices. Our two modern theatres are well equipped with the latest state-of-the-art surgical equipment, and because of our status as referral centre, we perform the highest quality of surgery and render the best possible patient care. These include using the latest operating techniques, routine blood tests to determine the health of your pet's organs before undergoing anaesthesia, as well as the best treatment before, during, and after surgery, including pain management, nutritional care, and providing a comfortable environment while recovering. We also daily do routine general surgical procedures, such as spays, castrations, wound suturing, tumour removals, etc.

If your pet needs to be hospitalized, you can rest assured, our team will provide the individual care your pet deserves. Your pet's comfort and recovery is top priority with our experienced doctors, nurses, and support staff. One of our highest goals is to keep our patients as pain-free as possible.
Our hospital care service includes: Clean, comfortable, and safe cages, a separate isolation ward for contageous diseases, in-patient examinations, evaluations and diagnostics, IV fluid therapy, oxygen therapy, special feeding, and doctor supervised nursing care and monitoring of our hospital patients. Our fully qualified veterinary nurses assure that your pets receive all the tender loving care they need to recover. 

                   
►  Hospital services:


                                            
 

We are committed to comprehensive physical examinations each time your pet come to visit us. We have an on site laboratory, X-ray facilities with digital developing, ultrasound (sonar), high tech fiber-optic endoscopy and bronchoscopy, blood transfusions, and when the time eventually arrives, we also provide an euthanasia service, where we ensure your pets' dignity and comfort while arranging for the return of their ashes if so required.


►  Dentistry:


                                                                                                       

We cater for all your pet's dental needs, including dental tartar scaling and polishing, and tooth extractions.


►  Ambulance service:



                                                                           

We have a unique pick-up and drop-off service for patients, the only one of its kind in our area.  We also do house calls.

►  Vetshop:


Our Vetshop is situated inside the practice, which makes your visit to us a pleasant one-stop experience. For your convenience and your pet's enjoyment, we have a full supply of pet accessories, supplements, chews and treats, toys, dental supplies, shampoos, and more, available at our Vetshop.

And of course, we also offer a wide range of premium pet foods. We stock the following superior brands to suit each of your pet's unique nutritional needs:
  • Dogs:  Eukanuba, Hills Science Plan, Royal Canin, Ultradog, Vet's Choice, Supervet, Olympic,  Optiwoof, and on public demand, now also Montego Classic.
  • Cats:  Iams, Hills Science Plan, Royal Canin, and Fancy Feast.

We also stock the full range of special tailor-made prescription diets for pets with specific medical conditions, as prescribed by our vets.

The best news is... WE DELIVER!  Yes, if you wish, we can deliver your pet's food right at your front door! 
Just phone Reception (012-331-3366), place your order (preferably at least one day in advance to ensure that we have stock), pay the amount into our bank account and fax proof of payment to us. Alternatively you can pay at Reception when placing your order, or pay the amount to the driver when he delivers the food, after which he will hand you a receipt.

Delivery cost in the Moot, east of Voortrekkers Road up to the N1 highway will be R15-00 (irrespective of the quantity delivered), while the cost west of Voortrekkers Road and east of the N1 highway will be R20-00. Delivery north of the Magalies mountain and south of Meintjeskop will also be R20-00. Please note, we currently only deliver once daily and only on week days. 

 

Staff

► Our two doctors are Dr. Freddie Malan and Dr. Stefan Steyn.


DR. FREDDIE MALAN, BVSc BVSc(Hons) MSc(Veterinary Science)(Chir)(Pret) MRCVS
Dr. Malan is our surgeon. He qualified as veterinarian in 1989. After completing his national service as State Veterinarian in the then Bophutatswana, Jakaranda Animal Hospital was established by him in 1990. Dr. Malan worked as general small animal practitioner for many years, before eventually starting to persue his real passion in veterinary science, namely surgery. He obtained a BVSc(Hons) degree in 2006, after which he commenced a full-time residency in small animal surgery at Onderstepoort. Dr. Malan did research on the repair of fractured dachshund tibias and was awarded an MSc(Veterinary Science)(cum laude) degree in April 2012, based on his research. Dr. Malan performs advanced orthopaedic, spinal and soft tissue surgery on dogs and cats. He is married to Nadia and they have two sons and more animals (of every imaginable kind!) than one would ever believe. 


► Our veterinary nurse is Sr. Marieke Kerkhoff.
