Veterinarian and Owner: Dr Ian Southern

Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Pretoria 1984)
- Award for Top Pathology Student in final year
BCom Economics (Unisa 1991)

After graduating, Dr Southern did his National Service in Giyani, Gazankulu assisting rural animals as a state vet.

He later joined Bedfordview Veterinary Hospital as an assistant vet, before taking up a partnership at Eastleigh Veterinary Clinic.

Seven years later he was able to follow his dream of setting up his own practice, when he opened The Avenues Veterinary Clinic in November 1994.

As well as assisting our usual types of patients, Dr Southern also has experience in treating reptiles such as snakes, Gecko lizards and Bearded Dragons.

Dr Southern is an avid cyclist in his time off and has completed many 94.7 and Argus races as a valuable member of the Hill's Veterinarian Cycling team.
 

Veterinarian: Dr Bernadette Eales

Dr Eales was 1st vet to join Dr Southern at The Avenues 4 yrs after the clinic opened it's doors. With a passionate love for cats (and owner of 10 cats herself!) Dr Eales is our resident kitten hand-raiser.
She also has a keen interest in bird medicine.

Dr Eales just recently walked the Comrades and completed in a time many runners would envy! She can often be seen pounding the pavements of Edenvale and it's surrounding areas.

Dr Justin joined us at The Avenues after graduating in 2008. Before graduation, he worked at the Johannesburg Zoo assisting the Zoo vet with game capture and surgical procedures. He is a big supporter of Free Me, a wildlife rehabilition centre, and has volunteered many hours there.

Dr Justin is also an avid cyclist who enjoys both on and off road cycling, and has many 94.7 and Argus races under his belt.
